Introduction
Most developers working on embedded IoT projects have encountered pitfalls with software TCP/IP protocol stacks: cumbersome porting, difficult debugging and troubleshooting, continuous occupation of the main controller's computing power by network communication, and even a slight overlay of complex business logic can easily lead to laggy performance, packet loss, or even protocol stack crashes. WIZnet has been deeply involved in the industrial networking field for many years with its full-hardware TCP/IP protocol stack technology. From the classic external W5500 Ethernet chip to the current single-chip solution W55MH32 with integrated main controller, it directly integrates the Cortex-M3 core, hardware TOE offload engine, MAC, and PHY into a single chip, fundamentally reducing the development threshold and operational risks of MCU networking.
Recently, we obtained the official evaluation board W55MH32L-EVB built on the W55MH32L. It not only fully exposes all the peripheral resources of the chip but also comes with an on-board AHT20 temperature and humidity sensor, an active buzzer, EEPROM, an SD card slot, and Arduino-compatible pin headers. It even integrates a WIZ-Link debugger, allowing programming, debugging, and serial output to be completed with just one USB cable, enabling hands-on development right out of the box.More notably, the official has already released fully compatible MicroPython firmware, enabling users to quickly implement peripheral control and Ethernet communication using Python scripts without having to delve into registers or write low-level drivers manually.
This article starts with the disassembly of hardware specifications, and based on the MicroPython Development Environment, sequentially conducts actual tests on core functions such as GPIO input/output, I2C sensor reading, SPI screen driver, and basic network communication, comprehensively presenting the entry threshold, actual performance, and applicable scenarios of this development board, providing a comprehensive reference for readers who intend to start with hardware IoT projects.
1. Introduction to W55MH32 Chip
1.1 Introduction
W55MH32 is a newly launched high-performance Ethernet microcontroller by WIZnet. It uses a high-performance Arm® Cortex-M3 core with a maximum main frequency of 216MHz, and comes with 1024KB FLASH and 96KB SRAM built-in.Notably, it is equipped with the WIZnet TCP/IP offload engine (TOE), integrates a full-hardware TCP/IP protocol stack, MAC, and PHY, and is also provided with a 32KB independent Ethernet transceiver buffer for 8 hardware sockets, making it a true All-in-One solution.
W55MH32 comes in two packages, one is 100QFN (12x12mm), which is W55MH32L in the above figure (left), and the other is 68QFN (8x8mm), which is W55MH32Q in the above figure (right). The W55MH32L-EVB used in this tutorial uses W55MH32L, and we will not provide a detailed explanation for the other package
1.2 System Framework
The W55MH32 chip supports a rich set of external interfaces, including GPIO, ADC, UART, SPI, I2S, I2C, and SDIO, etc., facilitating connection and interaction with sensors, actuators, and other peripheral devices. These features make the W55MH32 chip suitable for various application scenarios that require efficient network communication and data processing, such as smart home, industrial automation, smart grid, etc.
